ASMARA BERAKI
Drawn to the auteur tradition of filmmaking I moved to Europe to study cinema. In addition to directing I write haikus, quilt, and am now embarking on the age old practice of painting oils.

WINDS OF CHANGE
(Color, 40 seconds, 4K)
A rapid piece that symbolizes a sense of joy and freedom from simple things. It is one of a longer series of cell phone films I call Quotidian Cinematics. This particular one has a special meaning to me. I filmed it after my son and I finally concluded a long period of trial and separation due to being wrongfully detained in a Hague case. He is working on a website where he and other children can share their stories, coming soon at www.internationalcustody.org.

AA MICHAEL TRIPTYCH
(oil paint on canvas, 2024)
A series of three paintings made by the request of a Coptic priest from the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. One is for Oakland, one is for San Francisco, and one for a village outside of Asmara.
